EFFECTS OF SUN DAMAGE ON THE SKIN

Many disregard the effect sun damage has on the skin. Whether melanated or unmelanated sun damage still shows in our skin and is proven to be the leading cause of skin cancer. So here is how to recognize the signs of sun damage and what to do to prevent further worsening.

NON-MELANATED : When it comes to those who have less melanin production it is a bit easier to identify when the sun’s rays have harmed their skin. Common signs include sunburn, wrinkles, sun spots and redness. The signs that are less known include Hyperpigmentation, visible blood vessels and skin thinning. Hyperpigmentation is the increase in melanin production in certain areas of the body, this can show up as an uneven skin tone or blotchy discolored patches on the skin. Skin thinning and visible blood vessels go hand in hand. As too much exposure to the sun’s rays thins the skin, making blood vessels more visible and leaving people with  skin that’s become prone to bruising.

MELANATED:  When it comes to those with melanin in their skin, it might be a little more difficult to realize when your skin is sun damaged but here are a few signs and symptoms. Hyperpigmentation, Melasma, Premature aging and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The skin may also appear very dry and cracked even though it’s moisturized. Melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation that appears as brown patches on the skin. While post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the increase in melanin production in spots that have caused trauma to the skin such as wounds, acne, scars.

In both types of skin types long term effects of sun damage includes higher risk of skin cancer and premature aging. This is why it is recommended to EVERYONE to wear sunscreen, protective gear against the sun and stay hydrated. Doing all three of these will lower your risk of sun damage.

P.S I know some people struggle finding sunscreen that fits their skin due to preferences so my next post will be a post on different types of sunscreens depending on preferences.
